NACOC 2020
Well, 2020 certainly wasn’t our typical busy year. Club events were severely curtailed and no competition events were held. We certainly missed seeing our CCCC friends at conferences and our own special 50th Anniversary Convention plans were iced as COVID shut down gatherings and forced us to maintain a safe distance from others.
Before the pandemic began, early in the year, our club did continue with the January and February in person meetings at Boston Pizza and some members met on the 3rd Wednesday of the month for a Coffee Meeting visit. By March, however, everything changed and NACOC began using a virtual “meet” for most of our monthly meetings. A planned Club Social in March – dinner at the Bruce Hotel – was cancelled. Cancelled seemed to be the tag line for most events during this difficult year.
The summer months did afford us the opportunity to drive our Vettes and meet for the monthly Ice Cream Runs. NACOC found ice cream in Devon, Edmonton, and Spruce Grove before finishing up the summer with a drive and a repeat drive to Fort Saskatchewan for the final two runs. Miller’s Ice Cream in Fort Saskatchewan was a great venue for a meet with lots of parking and grassy areas, allowing us to spread out and stay safely “social distanced”.
One of the most successful events this past year was an Edmonton Food Bank donation drive-by and drop off followed by a short stop to show the Vettes to the staff and volunteers of this very important organization. NACOC members made a very healthy donation to the Food Bank, continuing the tradition of giving back to the community. Following, members were hosted by a nearby automotive shop – Acceleration Automotive - for a tour and lunch.
The Annual Croquet Tournament did go ahead in September as members were still able to meet outside and enjoy the competition. September also saw one of the only car shows held this year and several members made the drive out to Fallis to enjoy the event.
As the cooler weather settled in, outside activities became more difficult and our club once again reverted to virtual meetings. The second wave of the pandemic forced the cancellation of our Annual Awards Banquet and Christmas Party. As the year 2020 came to a close, we all were left hoping for a much better and more active 2021!
